Pythagoras in applications
How it works
In the right-angled triangle, first choose the hypotenuse. For a missing leg, subtract the other leg's square from the hypotenuse square. Diagonals often provide suitable right-angled triangles.
Note
Leg a=√(c²−b²); Rectangle diagonal d=√(a²+b²).
Leg a=√(c²−b²); Rectangle diagonal d=√(a²+b²).
An example
A ladder stands 9 m from the wall and reaches a height of 7 m. How long is the ladder? Round to two decimal places. Give the result in m.
Ladder = hypotenuse. l = √(9² + 7²) = √130. Result: 11.4 m.
