Addiction prevention and health – basic principles
How it works
Addiction prevention includes measures aimed at preventing the development of addiction disorders. Health is a state of physical, mental and social well-being. Addiction can arise through various substances (e.g. alcohol, nicotine, medicines) or behaviours (e.g. gambling). Risk factors for addiction include, among other things, genetic predisposition, social environment, stress and a lack of coping strategies. Protective factors are stable relationships, self-confidence and access to information. Prevention can take place at the individual, school and societal level.
Addiction prevention is based on recognising risk factors, strengthening protective factors and promoting a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent the development of addiction.
