CLASS 8 · LEARNING KNOWLEDGE
Human reproduction – basic principles
How it works
Human reproduction is a biological process in which two sex cells (sperm and egg cell) fuse and form a new individual. Reproduction includes the formation of germ cells (gametes), their fusion (fertilisation), the development of the embryo and birth. The sex organs perform different tasks. Hormones control the maturation of the germ cells and the changes in the body during puberty. Reproduction ensures the survival of the species by enabling genetic diversity.
Note
Human reproduction takes place through sexual reproduction, in which sperm and egg cell fuse. The germ cells are formed by meiosis, each contain a single set of chromosomes and unite during fertilisation to form a double set of chromosomes.

An example
What task does the egg cell have in human reproduction?
The egg cell provides the female genetic material and fuses with a sperm during fertilisation, so that a new living being with a complete set of chromosomes is formed.
