Puberty and physical development – basics and principles
How it works
Puberty is a life stage in which the body develops from that of a child into that of an adult. It usually begins between 9 and 14 years of age and is controlled by hormones. Typical changes affect growth, the development of the sex organs, the voice breaking in boys, the onset of menstruation in girls, and the development of body hair. Psychological changes and changed social behaviour are also typical. Puberty varies from person to person and lasts several years.
Note
During puberty, hormones bring about physical and mental changes that can develop differently in boys and girls.
