CLASS 7 · LEARNING KNOWLEDGE
Aquatic ecosystem – basic principles
How it works
An aquatic ecosystem consists of abiotic (e.g. temperature, light, oxygen) and biotic (e.g. plants, animals, microorganisms) factors that interact with one another. Producers (plants, algae) produce biomass through photosynthesis, consumers (animals) eat other living organisms, decomposers (e.g. bacteria, fungi) break down organic material. Nutrient cycles and energy flow are central principles. Adapted organisms live in different aquatic zones (e.g. littoral zone, open water, bottom zone).
Note
In an aquatic ecosystem, abiotic and biotic factors act together; nutrient cycles and energy flow connect producers, consumers and decomposers.

An example
What is the main task of producers in a lake ecosystem?
Producers such as aquatic plants and algae carry out photosynthesis and convert solar energy into chemical energy. They produce biomass that serves as food for other living organisms.
