Blood and circulation – basic principles

How it works

Blood consists of solid components (red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets) and liquid plasma. It transports oxygen, nutrients, and waste substances. The heart is a muscular pump that pumps the blood through the systemic circulation (greater circulation) and the pulmonary circulation (lesser circulation). Arteries carry blood away from the heart, veins toward the heart. Capillaries enable the exchange of substances. The circulation ensures the supply and removal of substances for the cells.

Note
Blood and circulation secure the survival of the body cells by transporting oxygen, nutrients, and waste substances; the heart and blood vessels control the direction and distribution of the blood.

An example

What is the main task of the red blood cells?

The red blood cells transport oxygen from the lungs to the body cells. They contain hemoglobin, which binds oxygen.
