Cell organelles and their functions – basic principles
How it works
Cells are the basic units of all living things. They contain various cell organelles, each of which performs specific tasks. Important organelles are the nucleus (control, storage of genetic information), mitochondria (energy production), chloroplasts (photosynthesis; in many plant cells, especially in green parts of plants, not in animal cells), endoplasmic reticulum (transport and production of substances), Golgi apparatus (processing and shipping of substances), lysosomes (breakdown of cell components), cell membrane (boundary, exchange of substances) and cell wall (stability; plant cells have a cell wall, animal cells do not).
Each cell organelle has a characteristic structure and performs a specific function that is necessary for the survival and work of the cell.
