Seeds, germination and growth – basic principles
How it works
Seeds are the reproductive units of many plants. They contain an embryo and nutrients that are necessary for the development of the young plant. For germination, seeds usually need water, warmth and oxygen. During germination, the embryo begins to grow by first forming a root and then a shoot. Different plant species have different seed forms and germination conditions. Plant growth takes place through cell division and elongation, with light and nutrients playing an important role.
Note
For the germination of a seed, water, warmth and oxygen are usually necessary; light is important for most seeds only after germination.

An example
What happens first when a seed germinates?
First, the root grows out of the seed so that the young plant can absorb water.
