Birds and Feathers – Basic Principles

How it works

Birds are vertebrates with characteristic features such as feathers, a beak, and usually the ability to fly. Feathers serve for flying, thermal insulation, and often also for camouflage or courtship behaviour. The bird's body is adapted to flight: a light skeletal structure, powerful chest muscles, and special respiration. Not all birds can fly, but all have feathers. Reproduction occurs via eggs with hard shells. The diversity of feathers enables different ways of life and adaptations to the habitat.

Note
Birds are recognized by feathers; feathers serve various functions such as flying, keeping warm, and camouflage. Not all birds can fly, but all have feathers.
