Vertebrates at a glance – basic principles
How it works
Vertebrates are animals with a spine (backbone). Vertebrates include fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. They differ in body structure, skin covering, reproduction and habitat. Vertebrates have an internal skeleton and a skull. Depending on the group, they have fins, legs or wings; some, like snakes, have no limbs. They have a central nervous system. Their respiration and reproduction are adapted to different habitats.
Note
Vertebrates are recognized by their common characteristic, the spine, and they are classified into five classes with characteristic differences.
