Characteristics of life and observing

How it works

Typical characteristics of living things are being made up of cells, metabolism, growth, response to stimuli, and self-movement. In addition, living things can produce offspring as a species, and species show adaptations to their environment. Observing is an important method in biology for recognizing and describing living things and their characteristics. A distinction is made between direct observations with the senses and observations with aids such as magnifying glasses or microscopes.

Note
Whether something is alive is usually recognized by several characteristics together: being made up of cells, metabolism, growth, response to stimuli, and self-movement. Reproduction helps preserve the species, even if not every individual can reproduce itself. Observations should be carried out systematically, carefully, and, if possible, with suitable aids.

An example

Which characteristic does not belong to the characteristics of life?

The characteristic "glowing" does not belong to the typical characteristics of life. Growth, metabolism, and response to stimuli are typical characteristics of living things; reproduction serves to preserve the species.
