Final exam preparation: sentence linking and punctuation in Latvian

How it works

In the Latvian language, sentence connections (conjunctions, relative pronouns, adverbs) and correct punctuation are crucial for the coherence and comprehensibility of texts. Important conjunctions are ‹un› (and), ‹bet› (but), ‹jo› (for), ‹vai› (or), ‹tāpēc ka› (because). In Latvian, commas are often placed before conjunctions such as ‹bet› and in subordinate clauses, but not before ‹un› when two elements of equal rank are connected. Punctuation can change the meaning of a sentence. Example: ‹Es mācos, jo man patīk mācīties.› (I am learning because I like learning.)

Note
In Latvian, a comma is placed before ‹bet› and in subordinate clauses, but not before ‹un› when connecting parts of equal rank. Conjunctions connect sentences or parts of sentences and determine the sentence structure.

An example

The comma is correct: ‹Es gribu doties uz kino, bet tu nevari nākt.› In Latvian, a comma is placed before ‹bet›.
