Final exam preparation: Orthography and diacritical marks in Latvian
How it works
In Latvian, diacritical marks (such as the macron, caron, and other special signs) play a central role in the meaning and pronunciation of words. For example, ‹masa› (mass) differs from ‹māsa› (sister) by the macron over the ‹a›. Letters such as ‹š›, ‹č›, ‹ž›, ‹ņ›, ‹ļ›, ‹ģ› and ‹ķ› also have their own sounds. Incorrect or missing diacritical marks can lead to misunderstandings, as they often indicate different words or meanings. Correct spelling is therefore especially important in order to express yourself clearly and correctly.
In Latvian, every diacritical mark must be set correctly, otherwise the meaning of the word can change. For example, ‹masa› means 'mass', while ‹māsa› means 'sister'.
