Final exam preparation: word meaning and paraphrase (Latvian)

How it works

In this topic area, you practice understanding Latvian words and sentences, grasping their meaning, and rephrasing them in other words (paraphrase). There are often several ways to express a fact. What matters is that you recognize the meaning and find suitable synonyms or explanations. Example: The word ‹draudzīgs› means ‘friendly’; a paraphrase would be ‹cilvēks, kurš labi izturas pret citiem› (a person who is nice to others). Idioms and paraphrases are also practiced.

Note
To determine the meaning of a Latvian word or sentence, pay attention to the context. Look for synonyms or paraphrases that have the same meaning. The paraphrase must not be too general or too specific, but must capture the core.

An example

What does the Latvian word ‹skolotājs› mean?

The word ‹skolotājs› means ‘teacher’; a suitable paraphrase would be ‹cilvēks, kurš māca skolēnus› (a person who teaches students).
