CLASS 9 · LEARNING KNOWLEDGE
School, profession and social everyday life in Latvian: vocabulary and reading comprehension
How it works
In this topic area, we learn how to speak in Latvian about school, professions, and everyday life in society. This includes important nouns such as ‹skola› (school), ‹darbs› (work), ‹skolotājs› (teacher), ‹students› (student), as well as verbs such as ‹mācīties› (to learn), ‹strādāt› (to work), and phrases for everyday situations, e.g. ‹Es eju uz skolu katru dienu› (I go to school every day). We pay attention to the correct use of cases, tenses, and polite forms of address in a social context.
Note
Use Latvian words and sentences passend to the context of school, profession, and everyday life. Pay attention to the correct case ending and tense. Choose the option that fits the given situation or meaning.

An example
How do you say in Latvian: “I work in the hospital”? Pay attention to ‹strādāju› and ‹slimnīcā›.
The correct Latvian translation is ‹Es strādāju slimnīcā›, because ‹strādāju› is the 1. person singular of ‹strādāt› and ‹slimnīcā› is the locative of ‹slimnīca› (hospital).
