Text purpose, point of view, and verifiable conclusions in Latvian
How it works
In Latvian texts, it is important to recognize the text purpose (e.g. to inform, persuade, entertain), the author’s point of view, and verifiable conclusions. The text purpose shows why the text was written. The point of view is the author’s opinion or attitude, often recognizable through formulations such as ‹es domāju› (I think) or ‹manuprāt› (in my opinion). Conclusions must be based on information in the text, for example by inferring from ‹Viņš katru dienu mācās› (He learns every day) that learning is important to him. One should always pay attention to formulations that signal opinions, intentions, or reasons.
Pay attention to signal words and the context in order to recognize the text purpose or the point of view. Draw conclusions only if they are supported by the text.
