Word formation and word families in context (Latvian)
How it works
In Latvian, many words are formed by derivation from word roots using prefixes, suffixes, and sometimes also by compounding. For example, ‹lasīt›, ‹lasītājs›, ‹lasīšana› and ‹izlasīt› belong to the same word family. Word families help to uncover the meaning of unfamiliar words. Nouns, verbs and adjectives are often formed from the same root. Prefixes such as ‹iz-›, ‹pa-› or suffixes such as ‹-šana›, ‹-tājs› change the meaning or the part of speech. Recognizing word families supports text comprehension and active vocabulary.
Pay attention to common word roots and typical prefixes/suffixes in order to recognize word families. This makes it possible to derive the meaning of related words from the context.
