Tenses in connected texts (Latvian)
How it works
In Latvian texts, the correct use of tenses (e.g. present ‹es eju›, preterite ‹es gāju›, perfect ‹es esmu gājis› / ‹es esmu gājusi›, future ‹es iešu›) is crucial for understanding sequences of events and connections. The tense shows when an action takes place: present, past, or future. In Latvian, the perfect is formed with a form of ‹būt› and the participle; the participle agrees with the gender and number of the subject. The choice of tense depends on the context, e.g. whether something is happening now, has already been completed, or will happen later. In longer texts, the tense must be consistent and logically match the sequence of events.
Make sure that the chosen tense matches the action described and the temporal sequence in the text. In Latvian, the preterite is used for completed actions in the past, the present for current or repeated actions, the perfect for past actions with reference to the present, and the future for future actions. In the perfect, the participle must agree with the subject, e.g. ‹es esmu lasījis› for a male speaker and ‹es esmu lasījusi› for a female speaker.
