Sentence linking with common conjunctions in Latvian
How it works
In this unit you will learn how to connect sentences in Latvian with common conjunctions such as ‹un› (and), ‹bet› (but), ‹jo› (for/because), ‹vai› (or), ‹kad› (if/when), ‹tāpēc ka› (because), ‹lai› (so that/in order to), and ‹ja› (if/provided that). These conjunctions help connect ideas, explain relationships, or form alternatives. For example: ‹Es mācos, jo man patīk mācīties.› (I am learning because I like learning.) The correct conjunction depends on the context: ‹un› connects similar things, ‹bet› creates a contrast, ‹jo› gives a reason, ‹vai› presents alternatives, etc.
In Latvian, the conjunction usually stands between the sentences or sentence parts being connected. The word order often remains as in the main clause. Choose the appropriate conjunction according to the meaning: ‹un› for lists, ‹bet› for contrasts, ‹jo› for reasons, ‹vai› for alternatives, ‹kad› for time references, ‹tāpēc ka› for reasons, ‹lai› for goals, ‹ja› for conditions.
