Cases and agreement in extended sentences (Latvian) – basics and application
How it works
In Latvian sentence usage, six case forms are usually distinguished; in addition, there is the form of address (vocative). Cases determine the function of nouns, pronouns, and adjectives in the sentence. Agreement means that adjectives and pronouns adapt to the noun in case, number, and gender. For example, in the sentence ‹Es redzu skaistu māju› the adjective ‹skaistu› is in the accusative singular feminine, because ‹māju› is likewise in the accusative singular feminine. Incorrect case or agreement forms lead to grammatically incorrect sentences. In extended sentences with several sentence elements or subordinate clauses, special attention must be paid to the correct agreement, e.g. in the sentence ‹Es dāvinu draudzenei skaistu ziedu pušķi›.
The adjective and the noun must agree in case, number, and gender in the sentence. The case is determined by the function in the sentence (subject, object, etc.).
