Short original texts: main idea and details
How it works
In this topic area, we practice reading comprehension of short Latvian texts. The goal is to recognize the main idea (the most important topic or central information) and individual details (e.g. who, when, where, what exactly). Everyday situations, simple descriptions, or short narratives are often used. Example: In the text ‹Anna dodas uz skolu ar draugiem›, the main idea is that ‹Anna› goes to school with friends. Details could be: Who goes? Where to? With whom? Such tasks promote careful reading and understanding Latvian sentences in context.
Read the text carefully. To identify the main idea, ask yourself: What is the central topic? For details: Look specifically for information about people, places, times, or actions. Pay attention to Latvian signal words such as ‹ar› (with), ‹uz› (to/toward), ‹no rīta› (in the morning) to find details.
An example
Read the text: ‹Mārtiņš spēlē futbolu parkā katru sestdienu.› What does ‹Mārtiņš› do every Saturday?
