Direction and movement in simple Latvian sentences
How it works
In this topic area, you learn how to express movements and directions in Latvian. For this, one often uses verbs such as ‹iet›, ‹braukt›, ‹skriet› and prepositions such as ‹uz›, ‹no›, ‹caur›. The preposition ‹uz› usually indicates movement toward a destination and is used with the accusative, e.g. ‹uz skolu›. The preposition ‹no› describes movement away from a place; in the singular, the genitive usually follows, e.g. ‹no skolas›, and in plural forms after prepositions often the dative, e.g. ‹no mājām›. After ‹caur› too, one needs the appropriate form, e.g. ‹caur parku›.
To express movement toward a destination, Latvian uses a movement verb and the preposition ‹uz› with the accusative. For movement away from a place, use ‹no›; in the singular, the genitive usually follows, e.g. ‹no skolas›, and in plural forms after prepositions often the dative, e.g. ‹no mājām›.
