Numbers and associated nouns in clear context (Latvian)

How it works

In Latvian, the form of the noun after numerals depends on the case of the whole expression. In simple nominative contexts, after ‹1› the noun is in the singular: ‹viens zēns›, ‹viena meitene›. After ‹2› to ‹9›, in such contexts the nominative plural is usually used: ‹trīs kaķi›, ‹četri krēsli›, ‹piecas krūzes›. In other cases, the entire numeral expression changes, e.g. genitive ‹piecu ābolu› (“of five apples”).

Note
In simple nominative contexts, after ‹1› the noun is in the singular. After ‹2› to ‹9› the noun is usually in the nominative plural. The form of the numeral must agree with the noun’s gender, e.g. ‹viens zēns›, ‹viena meitene›, ‹divi zīmuļi›, ‹divas krūzes›.

An example

Choose the correct Latvian form for “three cats”: ‹trīs kaķi› or ‹trīs kaķis›?

‹trīs kaķi› is correct because after ‹trīs› in this simple nominative context the plural is used.
