Simple comparison and comparisons in Latvian

How it works

In Latvian, adjectives are compared to express comparisons. The three usual school terms are ‹pamata pakāpe›, ‹pārākā pakāpe› and ‹vispārākā pakāpe›. The comparative is usually formed with the suffix ‹-āk-›, e.g. ‹liels – lielāks›. The superlative is formed with ‹vis-› before the comparative form, e.g. ‹vislielākais›. For comparisons, ‹nekā› is often used: ‹Viņš ir lielāks nekā es.› There are also irregular forms, e.g. ‹labs – labāks – vislabākais›.

Note
Form the comparative usually with the suffix ‹-āk-› and the superlative with ‹vis-› + comparative form. Pay attention to gender and ending, e.g. ‹ātrs – ātrāks – visātrākais› and ‹ātra – ātrāka – visātrākā›. Comparisons are often formed with ‹nekā›.
