Reflexive Verbs in Everyday Life (Latvian)

How it works

Reflexive verbs are verbs that show that the action falls back on the doer themselves. In Latvian, reflexive verbs in the infinitive are often recognized by the ending ‹-ties›, e.g. ‹mazgāties› (to wash oneself) or ‹ģērbties› (to dress oneself). In finite forms, the reflexive element remains part of the verb form, e.g. ‹Es mostos septiņos›, ‹Tu mazgājies›, ‹Viņi ģērbjas›. Such verbs are important in everyday life for talking about daily routines.

Note
In Latvian, reflexive verbs in the infinitive usually have the ending ‹-ties›. In the conjugated form, they keep a reflexive ending that depends on the person, e.g. ‹es mostos›, ‹tu mosties›, ‹viņš/viņa mostas›, ‹mēs mostamies›, ‹jūs mostaties›. The reflexive element is therefore part of the verb form.
