Dative in Latvian: recipient and simple states
How it works
In Latvian, the dative is used to express the recipient of an action or of an object, similar to German. The dative is also used with some expressions of state, for example to say how someone is feeling. Examples: ‹Es dodu grāmatu māsai.› (I give the sister a book), ‹Man ir auksti.› (I am cold). The dative is marked by endings that vary depending on the noun and declension class; common endings include ‹-am›, ‹-ai›, ‹-iem›, ‹-ām›.
Note
In Latvian, the dative is used to express the recipient (to whom?) of an action or a state (how is it for whom?). The form depends not only on gender and number, but also on the noun's declension class.

An example
Choose the correct dative form of ‹draugs›: ‹Es rakstu ___ vēstuli.›
The correct form is ‹draugam›, because ‹draugs› is masculine and here in the singular it takes the dative ending ‹-am›: ‹Es rakstu draugam vēstuli.›
