Food, shopping and polite requests in Latvian
How it works
In this topic area, we learn how to talk about food in Latvian, communicate while shopping, and formulate polite requests. Common nouns such as ‹maize› (bread), ‹piens› (milk) or ‹siers› (cheese) are used in the nominative and accusative. Polite requests are usually expressed with ‹lūdzu› (please) and polite formulations such as ‹Vai jūs varētu...› (Could you...) or ‹Es vēlētos...› (I would like...). When shopping, for example, one asks: ‹Cik maksā šī maize?› (How much does this bread cost?). The correct formulation is important in order to communicate politely and clearly.
For polite requests in Latvian, one often uses ‹lūdzu› before or after the request as well as polite questions with ‹Vai jūs varētu...› or wishes with ‹Es vēlētos...›. When shopping, the desired product after verbs such as ‹gribēt› or ‹vēlēties› is often in the accusative, e.g. ‹Es gribu sieru.›
