CLASS 6 · LEARNING KNOWLEDGE
Common past tense forms as an introduction (Latvian)
How it works
In Latvian, the past is often called ‹pagātne›. A common past tense is the simple past for completed actions. Examples: ‹es gāju›, ‹viņa lasīja›, ‹viņš vakar spēlēja futbolu›. The forms change depending on the person. In many verbs, the 3. person singular and plural are the same, for example ‹viņš lasīja› and ‹viņi lasīja›. The past tense is often used in narratives, reports, and questions about earlier events.
Note
With many verbs, the best way to learn the past tense is as a whole form. Common patterns are, for example, ‹es dziedāju›, ‹tu dziedāji›, ‹viņš dziedāja›, ‹mēs dziedājām›, ‹jūs dziedājāt›, ‹viņi dziedāja›. So one should not look only at a single ending such as ‹-u› or ‹-ja›, but at the complete verb form.
