Adjectives: simple agreement with nouns (Latvian, 6 class)
How it works
In Latvian, adjectives must agree in gender, number, and case with the noun they describe. For example: ‹liels suns› (a big dog, masculine singular), ‹liela māja› (a big house, feminine singular), ‹ātrus zirgus› (fast horses, accusative plural), and ‹krāsainu puķu› (of colorful flowers, genitive plural). The adjective endings therefore match the noun and its case. In the masculine nominative singular, the adjective often ends in ‹-s›, in the feminine singular in ‹-a›. In the nominative plural, the endings are often ‹-i› (masculine) and ‹-as› (feminine).
The adjective takes over the noun’s gender, number, and case. Examples in the nominative: masculine singular often ‹-s›, feminine singular ‹-a›, masculine plural ‹-i›, feminine plural ‹-as›. In other cases, the endings also change, for example in ‹ātrus zirgus› and ‹krāsainu puķu›.
An example
Choose the correct adjective form: ‹liels› + ‹mašīna› (car, feminine singular).
