Locative for unambiguous place indications in Latvian
How it works
The locative in Latvian is used to indicate a place or position, often without a preposition: ‹skolā›, ‹parkā›, ‹slimnīcā›. The form depends on the declension class of the noun, not only on the gender. In this topic area, forms such as ‹skola → skolā›, ‹parks → parkā›, ‹vilciens → vilcienā› and ‹kinoteātris → kinoteātrī› often appear. In the plural, place indications appear, for example, as ‹skolās› or ‹bibliotēkās›.
Note
Learn the appropriate locative form together with the noun. For many common words ending in ‹-a› and ‹-s›, the singular locative is ‹-ā›, e.g. ‹skola → skolā› and ‹parks → parkā›. However, there are also other patterns, e.g. ‹kinoteātris → kinoteātrī›. The locative answers the question about place: ‹Es esmu skolā.›
