Present forms of more common regular verbs in Latvian

How it works

In Latvian, the present tense form of many common verbs depends on person and number. The forms often have to be learned together with the verb. For example, the verb ‹strādāt› (to work) has the following present tense forms: ‹es strādāju›, ‹tu strādā›, ‹viņš strādā›/‹viņa strādā›, ‹mēs strādājam›, ‹jūs strādājat›, ‹viņi strādā›/‹viņas strādā›. For another common verb, the forms are, for example, ‹es lasu›, ‹tu lasi›, ‹viņš lasa›. So the correct present tense form depends on the subject and on the respective verb.

Note
First determine the subject, for example ‹es›, ‹tu›, ‹mēs› or ‹viņas›. Then choose the appropriate present tense form of the verb. Examples: ‹es lasu›, ‹tu lasi›, ‹viņš lasa›; but with ‹strādāt› it is ‹es strādāju›, ‹tu strādā›, ‹mēs strādājam›. So pay attention to the form of the respective verb and not just to one general ending.

An example

Choose the correct present tense form of ‹dzīvot› (to live) for ‹mēs› (we):

The correct form is ‹mēs dzīvojam›, because for the subject ‹mēs› the form ‹dzīvot› is used with ‹dzīvojam›.
