Family, school, and short original dialogues in Latvian – basics

How it works

In this topic area, students learn basic Latvian words and structures on the topic of family and school. These include family members such as ‹mamma› (mother), ‹tēvs› (father), ‹māsa› (sister) as well as school words and people such as ‹skola› (school), ‹klase› (class), ‹skolotājs› (teacher). In addition, simple dialogues are practiced in order to introduce oneself, ask for someone’s name, or say who belongs to the family. Latvian sentences are usually subject-verb-object, e.g. ‹Es esmu skolēns› (I am a student).

Note
In Latvian, the subject usually stands at the beginning, followed by the verb. Family members and school items are used in the nominative when they are the subject of the sentence. In dialogues, simple polite forms such as ‹Sveiki!› (Hello!) and questions such as ‹Kā tevi sauc?› (What is your name?) are used.
