Exam preparation: mediation and accuracy of meaning (Russian)

How it works

In exam preparation for Russian, it is important to recognize and convey precisely the differences in meaning between similar words, idioms, and sentence structures. Mediation means transferring information accurately and appropriately for the situation from one language to another. In doing so, attention must be paid to nuances such as forms of politeness, tenses, and context. For example, ‹магазин› means “shop/store,” while ‹магазинчик› is a small shop. It is also necessary to distinguish whether ‹вы› (formal you) or ‹ты› (informal you) must be used. The exact meaning of verbs such as ‹идти› (to go, on foot) and ‹ехать› (to go/drive, by vehicle) must also be observed. The goal is to avoid misunderstandings and to capture and reproduce the intended meaning correctly.

Note
When translating and rephrasing, make sure to take into account the exact meaning, the form of address, and the context of the Russian words and sentences. Choose the wording that comes closest to the intended meaning.

An example

Which Russian verb fits best in the sentence ‹Я ... в школу на автобусе.›?

The correct choice is ‹ехать›: ‹Я еду в школу на автобусе.›, because the sentence is about moving by vehicle.
