Final exam preparation: Spelling of common Russian words
How it works
In the Russian language, the correct spelling of common words is especially important, because even small mistakes can change a word’s meaning. Many Russian words contain letters that do not occur in German, such as ‹ё›, ‹й›, ‹ы› or ‹щ›. The distinction between soft and hard consonants also plays a role. For example, ‹мать› is written with ‹ь›, while ‹мат› is written without ‹ь›. Correct spelling is also important for forms that look or sound similar. Historically, one distinguished between ‹міръ› and ‹миръ›; in modern Russian, the standard spelling is ‹мир›.
Pay attention to the exact sequence of letters and to signs such as ‹ё›, ‹й›, ‹ь› and ‹ъ›. Words with similar sounds can have different meanings and spellings. Common sources of error are the endings as well as the choice between ‹е› and ‹ё› or between ‹и› and ‹ы›. If a form is correct only in a certain case or number, the sentence context must also fit.
