School, profession and everyday social life – foundations and application in Russian

How it works

In this topic area, students learn how to talk in Russian about school, professions, and everyday life in society. This includes typical vocabulary for school subjects (e.g. ‹математика›), professions (e.g. ‹врач›, ‹учитель›), activities, and daily routines. Also important are basic sentence structures for expressing experiences, plans, or opinions. Correct use of verb forms, cases, and prepositions is crucial. For example, after ‹в›, the accusative is used with the day of the week: ‹в понедельник›. The distinction between masculine, feminine, and neuter nouns also affects the endings.

Note
In Russian, certain prepositions are often used with the appropriate case for expressions of time and place. Professions usually stand in the nominative when they function as a predicate: ‹Он врач›. For activities at school or at work, verbs in the present tense or future tense are used. The correct ending depends on the person and the number.

An example
