Text purpose, point of view, and inferable conclusions in Russian

How it works

In Russian texts at lower and upper secondary level, it is important to recognize the text purpose (e.g. informing, persuading, narrating), the point of view of the author or a character, and logical conclusions from the text. The text purpose is often shown by certain formulations such as ‹я считаю› (I think), ‹по моему мнению› (in my opinion), or by the way the information is presented. The point of view is the attitude or opinion that a person in the text holds. Conclusions must be based on evidence from the text, for example by linking statements together or recognizing indirect clues. Example: If the text says ‹Он всегда помогает друзьям›, one can conclude that the person is helpful.

Note
Pay attention to formulations, expressions of opinion, and justifications in the Russian text. Draw conclusions only when they are supported by passages in the text. Distinguish between facts and opinions using linguistic cues.

An example

What is the author trying to express in the sentence ‹Я думаю, что спорт полезен для здоровья›?

The author expresses the opinion that sport is healthy. This can be recognized by ‹Я думаю›, which signals a personal view.
