Pronouns and case relations in the Russian sentence
How it works
In Russian, personal pronouns such as ‹он›, ‹она›, ‹они›, ‹его›, ‹её›, ‹их›, ‹ему›, ‹ей› and ‹им› must agree with the antecedent in person, number and – in the 3. person singular – in gender. The case of the pronoun depends on its function in the sentence or on the government of a verb or a preposition. Thus ‹его› is a form in the genitive or accusative, ‹ему› expresses the dative, and after prepositions forms with initial ‹н-› often appear, for example ‹о нём› or ‹с ней›. Choosing the correct pronoun is important in order to avoid misunderstandings. Examples: ‹Я вижу его.›, ‹Я даю ему книгу.›
Choose the correct Russian pronoun in the appropriate case according to its function in the sentence, for example as subject, direct object or indirect object. Pay attention to grammatical gender, number, and whether after a preposition a form such as ‹нём›, ‹ней› or ‹ними› is needed.
