Sentence linking with common conjunctions in Russian
How it works
In the Russian language, sentences are often linked with conjunctions such as ‹и› (and), ‹а› (on the other hand/but), ‹но› (but), ‹или› (or), ‹потому что› (because), ‹когда› (if/when), ‹если› (in case/if), ‹что› (that), and ‹чтобы› (so that/in order to). These conjunctions help connect thoughts logically and express relationships between clauses. For example, ‹и› connects equivalent information: ‹Я люблю чай и кофе.› With ‹но› an opposition is expressed: ‹Я люблю чай, но не люблю кофе.› With ‹а› two statements can be contrasted: ‹Я люблю чай, а мой брат любит кофе.› With ‹потому что› the reason follows: ‹Я не пошёл гулять, потому что шёл дождь.› With ‹что› one introduces an object clause: ‹Я знаю, что урок уже начался.› The correct choice of conjunction is important for the meaning of the sentence.
Choose the appropriate conjunction to connect sentences logically. Pay attention to the meaning: ‹и› for lists, ‹а› for comparisons, ‹но› for contrasts, ‹или› for alternatives, ‹потому что› for reasons, ‹если› for conditions, ‹когда› for time expressions, ‹что› for object clauses, and ‹чтобы› for purpose or goal.
