Russian verbs of motion: ‹идти›, ‹ходить›, ‹ехать› and ‹ездить› in the basic context
How it works
In Russian, verbs of motion are distinguished according to the manner of movement and according to whether the movement is taking place right now/in one direction or regularly/repeatedly. ‹идти› means on foot in one direction or to be on the way right now, ‹ходить› on foot regularly or repeatedly. ‹ехать› means by vehicle in one direction or to be on the way right now, ‹ездить› by vehicle regularly or repeatedly. Example: ‹Я иду в школу› means “I am going to school right now (on foot),” while ‹Я езжу в школу на автобусе› means “I regularly go to school by bus.”
Choose ‹идти› or ‹ходить› when the movement takes place on foot, and ‹ехать› or ‹ездить› when a vehicle is used. Use ‹идти› and ‹ехать› for a specific movement in one direction or right now. Use ‹ходить› and ‹ездить› for regular, habitual, or repeated movements.
