Prepositions with an explicitly specified case in Russian
How it works
In Russian, there are prepositions that regularly require only one fixed case. Examples are ‹к› with the dative, ‹без› with the genitive, ‹о› with the prepositional, ‹для› with the genitive, and ‹благодаря› with the dative. Choosing the correct case is crucial for the meaning of the sentence. For example: ‹Я иду к другу›, ‹Чай без сахара› and ‹Мы говорим о школе›. Errors in case selection lead to ungrammatical or unnatural sentences.
Note
For such Russian prepositions, always learn the fixed case as well. After ‹к› comes the dative, after ‹без› and ‹для› the genitive, after ‹о› the prepositional, and after ‹благодаря› the dative.
