Location and direction in clear context (Russian, 7 class)
How it works
In this topic you will learn how to indicate locations and directions clearly in Russian. For this, one often uses the preposition pairs ‹в›/‹из› and ‹на›/‹с›. When moving toward a destination, the accusative is usually used, for example ‹в школу› or ‹на рынок›. For a location without movement, the prepositional case is used, for example ‹в школе› or ‹на вокзале›. To express origin from a place, the genitive is used, for example ‹из дома› or ‹с почты›. Which preposition is correct therefore depends not only on movement or rest, but also on the respective word and common Russian usage.
With ‹куда?›, ‹в› or ‹на› are used with the accusative: for example ‹в библиотеку›, ‹на концерт›. With ‹где?›, ‹в› or ‹на› are used with the prepositional case: for example ‹в библиотеке›, ‹на вокзале›. With ‹откуда?›, ‹из› or ‹с› are used with the genitive: for example ‹из библиотеки›, ‹с почты›. They often form fixed pairs such as ‹в—из› and ‹на—с›.
