Food, shopping, and polite requests in Russian

How it works

In this topic area, we learn how to talk about food in Russian, communicate while shopping, and politely ask for something. This includes important nouns such as ‹хлеб›, ‹молоко› and ‹яблоко›, as well as verbs such as ‹покупать› and ‹есть› and polite requests with ‹пожалуйста›. Common patterns are ‹Дайте, пожалуйста, ...› and ‹Можно мне ...?›. The desired item often stands in the accusative, for example ‹Я хочу хлеб› or ‹Можно мне чашку чая?›. However, with quantity expressions and in some shopping forms, genitive forms also occur, for example ‹килограмм яблок› and ‹бутылка воды›.

Note
Polite requests in Russian are often formed with ‹пожалуйста›. While shopping, one often hears ‹Дайте, пожалуйста, ...› or ‹Можно мне ...?›. Many direct objects then stand in the accusative, for example ‹Дайте, пожалуйста, яблоко›. After quantity expressions, however, genitive forms often stand, for example ‹килограмм яблок› or in the combination ‹чашку чая›.
