Days of the week, appointments and dates in context (Russian, 6. grade)

How it works

In this topic area, you will learn how to name the days of the week in Russian, ask for the date, and arrange appointments. The Russian days of the week are: ‹понедельник› (Monday), ‹вторник› (Tuesday), ‹среда› (Wednesday), ‹четверг› (Thursday), ‹пятница› (Friday), ‹суббота› (Saturday), ‹воскресенье› (Sunday). To the question ‹Какое сегодня число?›, one usually answers with an ordinal number and the name of the month, for example: ‹пятое марта›. When stating an appointment with a day of the week and a date, one usually says, for example: ‹в пятницу, пятого марта› or ‹во вторник, двадцать третьего мая›.

Note
Days of the week stand in the nominative when mentioned on their own, for example ‹среда›. After ‹в›, the accusative is used in appointment details, for example ‹в среду›, ‹в пятницу› and ‹во вторник›. To ‹Какое сегодня число?›, one answers with the date, as in ‹пятое марта›. If the day of the week and the date appear together in an appointment, the ordinal number is usually in the genitive: ‹в пятницу, пятого марта›.

An example

Which Russian form means in German „am Mittwoch“: ‹в среду› or ‹среда›?

Correct is: ‹в среду›, because after ‹в› the accusative is used in an appointment detail. ‹среда› is the nominative and names only the day of the week in its base form.
