Prepositional case: Where is something located?
How it works
In Russian, the prepositional case (‹предложный падеж›) is used to express where something is located. Typical prepositions are ‹в› and ‹на›. After these prepositions, the noun in location expressions stands in the prepositional case: many masculine and neuter nouns then usually have the ending ‹-е›, feminine nouns ending in ‹-а/-я› usually also ‹-е›, words ending in ‹-ия› have ‹-ии›, and some feminine words ending in ‹-ь› have ‹-и›. Examples: ‹в школе›, ‹на столе›, ‹в городе›. Some words are invariable, for example ‹в кафе› and ‹в кино›.
Note
After the prepositions ‹в› and ‹на›, the following noun in location expressions stands in the prepositional case. Common patterns are: masculine/neuter usually ‹-е›, feminine ending in ‹-а/-я› usually ‹-е›, feminine ending in ‹-ия› ‹-ии›. Examples: ‹в магазине›, ‹на улице›. Some words are invariable, for example ‹в кафе›.
