Adjectives in the nominative: agreement (Russian, 6. grade)

How it works

In Russian, adjectives in the nominative must agree with the Russian noun in gender (masculine, feminine, neuter) and number (singular, plural). For example: ‹красивый дом› (beautiful house; Russian masculine), ‹красивая машина› (beautiful car; Russian feminine), ‹красивое окно› (beautiful window; Russian neuter), ‹красивые дома› (beautiful houses; plural). The endings of the adjective adapt to the noun. This is important for forming correct sentences.

Note
The adjective in the nominative agrees with the noun in gender and number. Typical endings are masculine ‹-ый›, ‹-ий› or ‹-ой›, feminine ‹-ая› or ‹-яя›, neuter ‹-ое› or ‹-ее› and plural ‹-ые› or ‹-ие›. Which of these variants appears exactly also depends on the adjective stem and sometimes on the stress.

An example

Choose the correct form: ‹больш__ дом› (big house; Russian masculine)

The correct form is ‹большой дом›, because ‹дом› is masculine in Russian and the adjective in the nominative singular masculine here gets the ending ‹-ой›.
