CLASS 5 · LEARNING KNOWLEDGE
Common verbs in the present tense as an introduction (Russian, class 5)
How it works
In Russian, common verbs such as ‹читать› (to read), ‹писать› (to write), ‹говорить› (to speak), ‹идти› (to go), ‹делать› (to do) and ‹жить› (to live) are conjugated differently in the present tense depending on the person. The endings show who is performing the action. For example: ‹я читаю› (I read), ‹ты читаешь› (you read), ‹он пишет› (he writes). The correct form depends on the subject. It is important to recognize and assign the base forms and the matching endings for different persons.
Note
The Russian verb in the present tense is adapted to the subject. The ending shows who is doing something. Example: ‹читать› – ‹я читаю›, ‹ты читаешь›, ‹он/она читает›.

An example
What is the correct Russian form for ‘you go’ with ‹ты›?
The correct form is ‹ты идёшь›, because the verb ‹идти› has the ending ‹ты› with ‹-ёшь›.
