Greetings, names, and introducing yourself in Russian

How it works

In this topic, you will learn how to greet someone in Russian, introduce yourself, and ask for a name. Typical greetings are ‹Здравствуйте› (formal), ‹Привет› (informal), and ‹Доброе утро› (good morning). To ask for someone’s name, you say informally ‹Как тебя зовут?› and politely ‹Как вас зовут?›. The answer to that is ‹Меня зовут ...› (My name is ...). It is important to choose the correct form of address: ‹Вы› for politeness, ‹ты› for friends or other children. The Cyrillic script is used, for example ‹Сергей› for Sergej. Introducing yourself and greeting correctly is a basis for further conversations.

Note
Greet people according to the situation with ‹Привет› (informal) or ‹Здравствуйте› (formal). Ask for someone’s name informally with ‹Как тебя зовут?› and politely with ‹Как вас зовут?›. Answer with ‹Меня зовут ...›. Pay attention to the correct spelling in Cyrillic.

An example

Which Russian greeting means the informal “Hello”: ‹Привет› or ‹Здравствуйте›?
