Sound-to-letter correspondence and stressed vocabulary words in Russian (beginners)

How it works

In Russian, the Cyrillic alphabet is fundamental. Many letters have a fixed basic sound, but their pronunciation can change depending on their position in the word. Stress is especially important: in Russian words, an unstressed vowel syllable can sound different from a stressed one. For example, ‹о› sounds like [o] in stressed position, but in unstressed position it is often reduced. Recognizing stressed vocabulary words helps you pronounce and spell words correctly. Example: ‹молоко› is stressed on the last syllable: ‹молоко́›.

Note
Pay attention to the connection between letters and sounds in Russian. Stress often changes the pronunciation of vowels. Learn the spelling and pronunciation of common vocabulary words such as ‹окно́›, ‹шко́ла› and ‹молоко́›.
