Cyrillic alphabet and recognizing letters
How it works
In Russian lessons in 5 grade, students get to know the Cyrillic alphabet. Many letters look similar to those in the Latin alphabet, but are often pronounced differently. For example, ‹В› in Russian stands for the sound [v], that is, the sound of the German ‹W›. Other letters such as ‹Д› or ‹Ж› are completely new. It is important to distinguish the letter shapes and their sounds in order to read and write words correctly. Some letters such as ‹Е› and ‹Ё› look similar, but have different sounds. Recognizing and matching the letters is the basis for reading and writing in Russian.
Many Cyrillic letters have a typical basic pronunciation. Some letters look like letters in German, but are pronounced differently. You therefore have to remember the shape and the usual pronunciation of each letter exactly.
