Exam practice: Mediation without shifting meaning

How it works

In English lessons, mediation means transferring information from a text or a conversation in such a way that the original meaning is preserved. The aim is to convey the content accurately, without adding, leaving out, or distorting information. To do this, you have to identify key statements, select important details, and reproduce them clearly. For example, ‹I have a cat› must not be translated as ‹I have a dog›, because that changes the meaning. Likewise, ‹He is ill› should not be rendered as ‹He is tired›. The goal is to convey the speaker’s or author’s intention correctly.

Note
When transferring information into another language or into your own words, the original statement must be preserved in terms of content. No shifts in meaning, omissions, or additions may occur. The central statement and important details must be reproduced correctly.

An example

Which rendering of the English sentence ‹She is looking for her keys› remains correct in terms of content?

The correct rendering is ‹Sie sucht ihre Schlüssel›, because this preserves the meaning exactly. A formulation such as ‹Sie hat ihre Schlüssel verloren› would be wrong, because it contains additional information.
